Key Questions to Ask Before Getting a Loft Conversion

A loft conversion can be a great addition to your home, providing a lot of extra space to be used as a new bedroom, playroom, office or anything you want. However, arranging a loft conversion will be a timely and somewhat expensive endeavour. Therefore, it is important to answer a few essential questions before you decide to get your loft converted in order to decide whether it will be worth the time, effort and finances.

Is There Enough Space?

The majority of lofts can be converted, but of course you’ll want to be sure that there is enough space for it to be a useable room. The internal height of the existing loft should be at least 2.5m, with the pitch of the roof at least 30 degrees and the footprint including internal walls that measure at least 5.5m side to side and 7.5m front to back. It is best to get a professional to survey your loft and check whether there’s enough space to convert.

Where Will the Entrance Be?

As well as having enough room to create a useable loft, you need to have a good access point. It’s no good creating a fantastic new playroom in the roof if it’s unsafe to get in and out of. Think about whether you will have to install stairs, a drop down or permanent ladder and that where it goes will not be blocking off any important parts of your home.

How Will Light Get in?

If your loft has just been used for storage, it’s unlikely it will possess any windows. Natural light is vital to create a good feel in the room, especially if used as an office, and there are a few window options. Depending on the size and shape of your roof, skylights, flat roof domes, sun tunnels and flashings will be the best choices to allow natural light into your loft.

What Will You Do with It?

There are many reasons to convert your loft and because it can be a costly and big job, you need to be clear that it is worth it. Ensure you can afford to have the work done and that it will provide a good return on investment. The extra space can save you from looking to buy a new home if used as an office or new bedroom, while also adding up to 20% value to your home.

Be sure to answer all these questions before getting a loft conversion in your home.
