REPLACING SEALANT IN THE BATHROOM IS HOME IMPROVEMENT JOB MOST LOATHED SURVEY REVEALS

  • Assembling flat pack furniture deemed the most time consuming DIY job around the house
  • Hanging a picture frame and changing a lightbulb are the DIY project British adults find the simplest to complete

26 May 2016 – Replacing sealant around baths and sinks is the Do-It-Yourself job British adults most dislike to undertake, research by the UK’s leading online LED lighting retailer, LED Hut revealed today.

More than a quarter of respondents (26%) claim applying sealant around baths and sinks is the DIY job they dread doing themselves. Bleeding radiators (22%) and unblocking the sink or toilet (18%) complete the list of top three DIY tasks Brits find most cumbersome and would rather leave to a professional than fix themselves.

Amongst 18-24 year olds, bleeding a radiator, (28%) is deemed the most troublesome DIY task to tackle whilst those aged 65 or older are least confident to put flat pack furniture together (24%).

In stark contrast, only one in ten British adults would seek assistance to change a lightbulb and only 9% deem hanging a picture frame to be the DIY task that they are most reluctant to undertake themselves.

As thousands prepare to get handy and undertake DIY jobs this Bank Holiday weekend, findings from LED Hut also show that almost half of Brits (44%) perceive assembling flat pack furniture as the most time consuming job they struggle to complete quickly. Amongst both Men, (38%), and Women, (52%), assembling flat pack furniture is perceived as taking the longest to complete.

The poll conducted by LED Hut also found that Brits of retirement age perceive changing a lightbulb to be more time consuming than replacing sealant around the bath or sink, bleeding a radiator and hanging a picture. The results are summarised in the infographic attached.

Commenting on the research, Chris Evans from LEDHut.co.uk, said: “When it comes to rolling up our sleeves and getting handy in the home over the Bank Holiday weekend, replacing sealant in the bathroom is the DIY job the majority of Brits are least confident to undertake themselves and seek a handyman instead.

“It seems that the fiddly and laborious nature of a number of DIY tasks, most notably applying sealant in bathrooms and bleeding radiators, means the term Don’t Do It Yourself applies just as readily when it comes to Brits’ approach to addressing repairs in the home.

“In contrast, our survey also shows that hanging a picture frame is one of the tasks men and women are most likely to willingly undertake themselves, as is the relatively straight forward task of changing a light bulb. And if LED bulbs are used, householders can at least be assured that they won’t have to change them again for some considerable time; LED bulbs typically have an operational life-cycle of over 50,000 hours of continuous operation.”
