Should I Plumb Distilled Water throughout My House?

can you drink tap water

If you are reading this, you are probably already convinced about the benefits of drinking distilled water — you may even already have a home water distiller. But you might be asking yourself if you’d better benefit from plumbing distilled water throughout your home. While this may seem like a good idea, it is not necessary for your non-consumptive needs.

On average, just a fraction of the water you use in your house will be for consumption. The lion’s share of water is used for laundry, washing the dishes and flushing the toilet. Therefore, it’s impractical and, not to mention, wasteful to use distilled water in your plumbing. A much wiser choice, however, is soft water.

What Is Soft Water?

Soft water removes minerals and replaces them with sodium. It’s not only good for your appliances and plumbing system, but also for your hair and skin.

Minerals harden your water, which can, over time, build up in your plumbing fixtures. They can also leave residue that affects the longevity of your appliances, such as your washing machine and dishwasher.

Soft water can also save you more money in the long run, as you’ll use less washing powder and fabric softener, since they work much better with soft water.

Distilled Water

Running tap water that’s already softened into a home water distiller ensures the highest level of purity of your drinking water.

It’s easy to find water distillers in the UK, but don’t be tempted to compromise quality for price. Your water distiller will become an appliance you’ll use everyday for years to come, so it’s important you choose the right one.

Money is not the only factor that plays a role in choosing the right water distiller. You can also base your decision on the average amount of water your household consumes each day.

Determine your daily water consumption

The first step is to work out how much water you drink each day. To do this, consider how many people live in your house, including any pets. Everyone is different and some individuals will drink more water than others. Keep count of everyone’s water intake for a few days or, better yet, ask your family or roommates to keep a record of their water consumption — there are even apps available that allow you to do this easily. This will let you choose a water distiller that, at the very least, matches your daily consumption. However, it’s worth considering going for something slightly bigger — distilled water tastes so pure, that you might start drinking more than you did before!

Now you know that it’s not necessary — in fact, it’s even wasteful — to plumb distilled water throughout your home. Instead, opting for soft water will save you money in the long run. For your drinking needs, you can never go wrong with a water distiller — just make sure you do your research and pick one that will satisfy the needs of your household.
