Bristol City Council prosecutes Property owner re Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed is a pest within weeds, an unwanted and fast-growing with strong clump-forming perennial – A nightmare for any property owner to deal with as it can cause structural damage.

A recent case of the spread of Japanese Knotweed saw Bristol City Council prosecute a property owner for allowing this plant to spread from within their back garden to neighbouring property. The Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 was used by the local authority to take the case to court and secure a conviction. MB Estate Limited who were found guilty were given a fine of £18,000 plus additional costs.

The government estimates that the cost of eradicating it across the UK would be £2.6bn.
