Modern slavery raid in Oldham – 7 Romanian people rescued from a property

Just how big is this issue across the UK? It is a very big issue and a battle that needs to be won – In all honesty, the book should be thrown at any person(s) that are behind slavery, illegal immigration and misuse of our housing stock. Will the punishment deter this from happening again and again and again… ???

A recent story released on the Manchester Evening News website highlights the story that seven Romanian people were rescued from a home in Oldham with an arrest of a couple on suspicion of modern slavery offences – Just why is this happening in the UK, it needs to be sorted ASAP! A minimum 20 years sentence, that is 20 years not out after 14 days with good behaviour, along with a sizeable fine and the ownership of the property in question being given to the local council to offer out as social housing.

Police were given a heads up on the unfortunate situation with reports of people being controlled and exploited at the said address. A middle aged Romanian male and female were arrested, remain in custody and have been questioned.

The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) and police officers raided a property on Thursday morning.Manchester Evening News.

GLAA Senior Investigating Officer, Martin Plimmer, was quoted as saying: “Our number one priority is to ensure that vulnerable and exploited workers are protected at the earliest opportunity so reports of this nature are treated with the utmost importance.
