The good news is that you can still enjoy the benefits that come with having adequate water, yet at the same time saving as much as you can.

Let’s find out how it’s done.

Reduce your shower time.

This can be pretty difficult especially if you love to indulge in long showers. However, cutting down on the time you spend taking your bath can go a long way in reducing the water bills you’d accumulate over time.

If you start by having a quick shower of about four minutes, it’s an easy way to save close to 4,000 gallons of water annually. You can save as much as $100 in a year, which will cause a swift improvement in your finances.

Do your dishes at once.

Washing your dishes one at a time is the easiest way to pile up water bills. It’s advisable to ensure that you load your dishwasher to accommodate as many dishes as it can.Not only will this reduce the frequency of washing, but you can also save water with this method.

Fix leaks.

Do not ignore leaks, no matter how insignificant it may be. Leaks in the toilets, pipes can cause lots of water to keep going down the drain every single day. The moment you recognize a leak anywhere, you should do everything you can to fix it urgently. If you are not too sure about recognizing whether there’s a leak in your toilet, add 5 drops of food coloring to the tank. If after ten minutes, the bowl changes its color, you should be convinced that there’s a leak.

Avoid hand-washing your dishes.

It’s easy to just grab a sponge, soap and wash your dirty dishes. But, I am sure you prefer to do this under running water. That’s how we all do it. Unintentionally, you use so much water from start to the end. However, when you use just about 1/6 less water simply by running a full load dishwasher.

Another point worth noting is that when you want to rinse, you should also avoid running it under the tap. Rather, you should fill a bowl or container with water and rinse your dishes thoroughly.

There’s no doubt that you will save as much water as possible.

Close tap when brushing or shaving.

If you have been doing otherwise, you need to stop. Because the quantity of water wasted in this act is much. When shaving and you’d like to rinse your razor, ensure that you keep a cup of hot water close to you and you dip it in frequently. And when you need to bring your teeth, ensure that you fill up your rinse cup with adequate water.

Turn off the flow.

Aside from reducing the quantity of time spent in the shower, it’s important that we optimize the water flow in the short duration we’ll be spending in the shower. To avoid wastage, you need to always turn off the flow when you are washing your hair or lather up your body soap.As you focus on scrubbing your body or conditioning your hair, ensure that the water is not flowing uninterrupted, because it is not in use. When you feel you are ready to rinse your body or hair, you can then switch it back on. This simple life hack will save you so much money.

Use a low-flow shower head.

Generally, a low-flow shower head helps in reducing the quantity of water used in shower to about 50%. It is cost effective and result yielding. It’s a good way to save money and avoid water wastage.

Improvise with plastic bottles.

This is a tried and tested method to prevent water wastage. You will need a few empty plastic bottles. You simply need to just place them in your toilet tank. These bottles typically occupy spaces that could have been refilled with water after every flush. All you need to do is to take two empty plastic bottles and put an inch of pebbles or sand inside you weigh them down. Afterwards, you must fill the bottles with water and cover tightly with the lid. And carefully put them in the toilet tank.

These practical tips will not only reduce your water bill drastically monthly, but will equally make you give extra savings. You must ensure that you know the various ways you waste water easily, and watch out for ways to prevent it.

However, when you notice that your water bill has spiked up, reach out to the provider urgently and demand that your meter be reread. It’s likely that there’s a leak or an error in reading the meter. Whichever the case maybe, ensure that you look out for a solution .
