1. Hire a junk removal company
Even though you may think it’s cheaper to do this job yourself, sometimes it can be more expensive. 2. Give closets some attention
After removing everything from the closet during a remodel, give it some attention. Particularly since everyone seems to love storage these days. Weed out no-longer-used items and add bins for shoes, linens, and clothes on hangers. For additional space, try installing shelving on one closet wall and use baskets for extra storage on top of the shelves.
3. Add a bar to hold towels and accessories
In the corner of a room, attach a simple 1×4 board on the wall horizontally across two studs about 26 inches off the floor, so it’s about 36 inches long if you use one-by-sixes or 48 inches long larger boards. Install three sets of double hooks, spaced 9 to 12 inches between each hook depending on how many items each hook can hold. Items used frequently should be stored closer to the shower or tub.
4. Provide an easy place for items to be dropped off
When you have contractors in and out of your house, it can be frustrating to leave their supplies all over the garage floor. Try adding a small bench with storage underneath where they can place their bags, toolboxes, or other items. This frees up floor space and makes the area more organized.
5. Hang baskets on the stair railing
Use long, narrow plastic hanging baskets on stair railings to store gloves, hats, scarves, and thick socks for cold weather climates. As people remove these heavier items as they come inside, the baskets are there waiting for them to use again next time they go outside. The result is that everyone has their items available when they are needed.
6. Keep track of cords in the office
It is surprising how many cords are needed to complete a project when you add up the number of computer cords, phone chargers, and other electronic devices that need to be plugged in at one time. Use twist ties to bundle cords together in groups before wrapping them with Velcro tape or sisal twine to keep everything organized. Label each group with masking tape and a marker.
