Is it all about “Location, Location, Location”…?

In the current world of technology which appears to be evolving on a daily basis, has the good old OS Map lost its way?  Are we becoming too reliant on Google or BING Maps?

Historically as a nation we are map lovers and inevitably with the digital age we are seamlessly integrating free internet maps into our lives to find pretty much everything.  We are going from loving paper maps to digital geographically referenced mapping and data to help us with, what appears to be, most of our daily movements…finding a shop, locating a house to buy or maybe checking yourself in on Facebook so that all your friends know you’re in the pub…!

I guess there is a place for everything but mapping of data is only going to get bigger, better and easier to use which can only be a good thing with the average age of a surveyor being over 50 years old.  Although I know many 50+ year old’s that are more tech savvy than me I can imagine there are many that aren’t and if ‘Location based data’ is to be king, it needs to be easy to use.

With a recent release of Ordnance Survey’s Open Map – Local, their most detailed free mapping layer, and an imminent release of valuable Land Registry boundary data we are going to be able to do even more powerful searches based on location.  This hotly anticipated data release, albeit probably not free, will go some way to making Estate Agents and conveyancers lives easier and will continue that ever changing Ordnance Survey mapping legacy we have grown to love.
