‘Spider season’ hits UK bedrooms
‘Spider season’ hits UK bedrooms – expert shares FIVE expert tips on keeping eight-legged visitors at bay
As autumn sets in, millions of UK households are bracing themselves for ‘spider season’, the surge of male spiders entering homes in September and October in search for a mate.
One of the most common places that spiders hide are the bedrooms, often having warm, dark and quiet spaces.
However, expert Luke Arnel-Cameron, Founder of Yass Clean working alongside Comfybeds, says that you can make a few changes to your bedroom to encourage spiders to stay outside.
“Spiders aren’t coming into our homes to scare us, they’re coming into our homes because we’re inviting them in with warm and cosy spaces. However, there’s nothing worse than turning around in the middle of the night to a spider facing you – a lot of people’s worst nightmare!”
Luke gives five tips on getting through spider-season this year, keeping bedrooms free of daddy long legs and friends:
Seal gaps around windows and skirting boards
“Spiders can squeeze through tiny gaps, so check around window frames, pipework and skirting boards and seal them with draught excluder strips. You can get these in your local hardware store, and they’re cheap and easy to apply!”
Keep clutter to a minimum
“Clutter in the bedroom isn’t great anyway, as it’s proven to lead to a worse quality sleep. However, storage boxes and bags of clothes can create ideal hiding places for spiders, so getting rid of these minimises the locations where they can hide. Clearing under-bed storage and vacuuming as much as possible will remove the shelter, but also the tiny insects that they feed on.”
Use natural scent deterrents
“Spiders, as well as most insects, hate strong smells such as mint, tea tree and citrus. A few drops of strong oils or a candle will help keep spiders at bay. Place some on the windowsill and the bed frames to discourage them from making an appearance.”
Reduce nighttime light near the windows
“Insects are drawn to light, including spiders. Keeping curtains closed after sunset, and switching off any unnecessary lighting will help keep spiders out of your bedroom.”
Choose bedding that limits hiding places
“Any bedding that is scrunched up and left on the floor overnight can be inviting bugs and insects. For example, if you throw many cushions on the floor each night, lift with caution the next day as there could be a spider hiding underneath. Keep bedding simple, with the pillows that you need and the duvet that you need with nothing additional.”
While spiders are typically harmless in the UK, thousands of Brits would list them as one of their biggest fears. Following these tips would help keep spiders out, and help everyone sleep a little easier throughout the autumn months.
