Average homebuyer travels 330 miles to find their ideal property

The latest research from The Property DriveBuy reveals that the average homebuyer travels 330 miles to find their ideal property when it comes to the distance between their current home and chosen location, as well as the miles clocked up in between viewings.

The survey of UK homebuyers*, commissioned by The Property DriveBuy, found that, on average, each buyer travelled 26 miles from their then-home to the area in which they were viewing properties. Accounting for the return journey, this is a total round trip of 52 miles.

On average, homebuyers viewed an average of two properties per day, with the average distance between each of these properties coming in at three miles.

Finally, the average homebuyer spent six separate days conducting these viewings, meaning that the total distance travelled in order to find their perfect property came in at an average of 330 miles.

The calculation breakdown

52-mile round trip between current home and area of choice.
Plus three miles travelled between each property during each viewing trip at an average of two properties per trip.
So for each day of viewing, a buyer travels an average of 55 miles.
The average homebuyer conducted viewings on six separate days. .
Total: 55 miles x 6 = 330 miles

Buyers at peace with the legwork required

Despite having to cover a huge amount of ground to find their dream home, buyers don’t feel aggrieved about the effort required.

78% said that the distance travelled was ‘about what they expected’ when starting out on the house hunting journey.

And almost nine out of ten buyers (89%) say that they wouldn’t, in hindsight, change their approach because the legwork is all part and parcel of the buying process.

Steve Foreman, Founder and CEO of The Property DriveBuy, commented

“Buying a new home is a major task. The financial side of things is often discussed, but the physical and mental excursion required often comes as a surprise, especially to first-time buyers.

And while the many miles you have to cover to find your dream home is an unavoidable reality, especially those moving to an entirely new town or city, those miles on the road don’t have to go to waste.

The Property DriveBuy app enables buyers to set live alerts along their route and uncover hidden property opportunities they’d never have known about before due to the restrictive search criteria dictated by the traditional property portals. So while you may have to hit the road to find your next home, now you can make the journey work for you.”
