Construction starts on over 100 new affordable homes in Nottingham

Work to build 106 new council houses has started in Top Valley.

Nottingham City Homes (NCH) was given planning permission to build the properties on land on Whitcombe Gardens, which is where the former Eastglade School stood. It was closed in July 2007 and demolished soon after.

The 106 new homes include 23 one bed flats, 63 two bed houses and 20 three bed homes – plus open space for the whole community to enjoy.

Nottingham company Pelham Architects has designed the site and local construction company Robert Woodhead Limited are building the homes. They will then be managed by NCH on behalf of Nottingham City Council, who will own the homes.

Builders are now on site and the homes are expected to be completed in 2023.  Once built, this will take the total number of new homes built for affordable rent by Nottingham City Council and Nottingham City Homes – as part of the Building a Better Nottingham programme to over 700 in the city.

Nick Murphy, Chief Executive of Nottingham City Homes, said: “This is one of the biggest projects in the pipeline for NCH and the council, as we continue our partnership to create affordable homes for local people on the council house waiting list.

“These homes will offer local people affordable, well-designed and energy efficient homes – places they will be proud to live. As well as these new homes, we are creating open green space and we are adding wider improvements to the area, which will benefit the whole neighbourhood and be an asset to the local community.”

Councillor Linda Woodings, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Housing and Heritage at Nottingham City Council, said: “We’re really proud to see the start of works on the Eastglade site which, when complete will provide over 100 new much needed council homes for affordable rent.

“Providing homes which are high quality, warm, energy efficient and safe is even more important now than ever as people spend more time at home. It is also important that, as part of the development we are able to provide green and open space, which the whole community can enjoy.

“We look forward to working with Nottingham City Homes and partners and seeing the transformation from an unused site into new homes for local people and families”.
