March 2020 Price Paid Data from HM Land Registry

Please note, due to the impact that the COVID-19 situation has had on HM Land Registry’s operational services the figures for this month may not be a complete picture and will be updated in future releases.


  • Most expensive residential property sold in March was in Kensington and Chelsea for £4,500,000
  • Cheapest residential property sold in March was in Hartlepool for £20,000
  • 39% decrease in newbuilds compared to March 2019

The most expensive residential sale taking place in March 2020 was of a terraced property in Kensington and Chelsea for £4,500,000. The cheapest residential sale in March 2020 was of a terraced property in Hartlepool for £20,000.

The most expensive commercial sale taking place in March 2020 was in City of Westminster for £25,000,000. The cheapest commercial sale in March 2020 was in Maidstone for £100.

Of the 54,785 sales received for registration in March 2020:

  • 40,964 were freehold, a 38% decrease on March 2019; and
  • 8,019 were newly built, a 39% decrease on March 2019

This month’s Price Paid Data includes details of more than 54,500 sales of land and property in England and Wales that HM Land Registry received for registration in March 2020.

Of the 54,785 sales received for registration 5,514 took place in March 2020 of which:

  • 100 were of residential properties in England and Wales for £1 million and over;
  • 71 were of residential properties in Greater London for £1 million and over;
  • None were of residential properties in West Midlands for more than £1 million;
  • 1 was of a residential property in Greater Manchester for more than £1 million; and
  • None were of residential properties in Wales for more than £1 million.

There is a time difference between the sale of a property and its registration at HM Land Registry.
