Range of meaures to tackle unfair and unreasonable abuses of leasehold following DCLG consultation

Consultation outcome from Department for Communities and Local Government 21st December 2017.

The full outcome of the consultation which closed 19th September 2017 ‘Tackling unfair practices in the leasehold market’ can be seen here.

The consultation looks at a range of measures to tackle unfair and unreasonable abuses of leasehold; in particular the sale of new leasehold houses and onerous ground rents.

The consultation also seeks views on excluding leaseholders from possession orders because of arrears of ground rent; and views on freeholders being able to challenge service charges for mixed tenure estates with shared facilities.

“We support the DCLG’s efforts to address the onerous and potentially unfair issues surrounding the leasehold system. Lenders will continue to work with Government and other interested parties to address the complexities associated with leasehold properties, particularly where valuation is concerned.”
