Voluntary Right to Buy scheme pilot launched
Housing association tenants are now becoming homeowners under the government’s extension of the right to buy scheme, a voluntary agreement between government and housing associations will give householders the opportunity to purchase their home under the new Voluntary Right to Buy scheme.
The National Housing Federation has signed a deal with the government to offer the chance to over a million housing association tenants to own their own home, since the launch of the pilot nearly 800 applications have been submitted by tenants.
A pilot is being used to develop the national scheme, the government has promised that once the scheme is rolled out nationally every home sold will be replaced with an additional new property increasing the overall supply of housing.
Following a visit to a family in Croydon to hear first hand about their experience of becoming a homeowner, Housing and Planning Minister Gavin Barwell, said: “Anyone who works hard and aspires to own their home should have that opportunity to do so. Right to Buy will help lots of people, like Sasha and Peter, go from being a tenant to homeowner.”
