Work starts on new family homes in Nottingham

Construction has started on 20 new council houses, which will provide new homes for local families in Top Valley.

Nottingham City Homes (NCH) and contractor Woodhead Group will develop the homes on behalf of Nottingham City Council. They will be built on the site of demolished flats and shops on Knights Close in Top Valley.

The homes, which include thirteen two bed houses, five four-bed properties and two two-bed flats, will be built to high energy efficiency standards and offer warm, secure and affordable modern homes, will go to Nottingham families on the City Council’s waiting list.

Also included on the site will be a retail unit and a parsonage, which has been commissioned and paid for by the local diocesan. Contractors are now on site and the work is expected to be completed in summer 2020.

These new homes are the latest of the Building a Better Nottingham developments in the north of the city, after planning permission was approved last year. This housing scheme is part of a longstanding partnership between the Woodhead Group and NCH which has delivered 164 homes so far.

So far, the Build a Better Nottingham programme has enabled more than 500 new council homes to be built for local people, with work on 100 more expected this year.

Nick Murphy, Chief Executive for Nottingham City Homes, said: “It’s going to be a busy year for new builds in Nottingham as we start work on our Top Valley development. We are investing further in creating good quality new council homes where people want to live.

“This is special year for us.  2019 marks the centenary of Council housing, when councils were first given the task of developing good quality new housing where it was needed. A hundred years later this is still our vision; we want to build warm and secure family homes that the people of Nottingham can afford to live in and these new properties will be no exception”.

Cllr Linda Woodings, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Housing at Nottingham City Council, said: “Together with Nottingham City Homes and other partners we’re developing a mix of properties across the whole city, from much-needed family housing to bungalows and independent living schemes which meet the needs of local people in Nottingham”.

“Sites which are no longer fit for purpose are being replaced with new, energy efficient, quality homes where people want to live and I’m pleased to welcome this phase of the scheme and look forward to seeing how the development continues to take shape over the coming months.”

Tom Woodhead, Director at Woodhead Group said:  “What makes our latest project unusual is the addition of the parsonage and retail unit as it replaces the grounds last remaining shop, which will better serve the needs of the local residents.”

The project has been delivered through Efficiency East Midlands (EEM), a not-for-profit procurement consortium for the public sector.
