How to Convert a Barn

Converting a barn is for many often considered a dream renovation project. You can take the opportunity to turn an empty or derelict barn and create a unique countryside home packed with character. Barn conversions are always popular, whether stone or timber, they can be transformed into traditional or contemporary homes. So how do you convert a barn and what do you need to think about before converting a barn into your dream home?

The potential to create a unique one-off home

When it comes to barn conversions, if there is only one rule that you should follow, it is to be ‘true to the building’ otherwise you will lose the wonderful character and form that a barn conversion offers. Well converted barns can create outstanding homes, you will often find large open plan layouts and exposed beams.

Once you’ve found your barn

Make sure to have a survey done, the original structure should not be damaged when converting your barn. Check the planning permission, planners often don’t like to see significant alterations to the external appearance. This could limit the number of new windows and doors etc. Barn conversions are likely to cost far more than a standard renovation, due to the amount of structural changes and stripping back required. You will also have more bespoke items such as windows and doors. Due to the individual nature of each barn and what your plans are, you are best working directly with a barn conversion architect to get an estimate of the cost. it’s a good idea to choose an architect who is specifically experienced in barn conversions as it is not always a straight forward project. Use local materials for repairs and re-use original materials wherever possible.

Design your Barn

It’s important to keep in mind what attracted you to the barn in the first place. Features such as old beams and exposed stonework will bring unique character to your finished home. The use of windows to bring natural light into a barn conversion is very important. A popular choice for a contemporary look is to glaze the gables, which will allow light to flood in as well making the most of the views from the barn. Mezzanine floors are a good way of making the most of the space whilst retaining the original features of the barn. Underfloor heating is always a popular choice for barn conversions.
