15 Proven Ways To Grow Your Twitter Following

Twitter logo

When used correctly, Twitter is a powerful tool for businesses of all sizes. This micro-blogging platform shares real-time information to help you build your brand presence, connect and engage with your customers and share information instantly.

But to do this, you need followers. Without them, your content isn’t seen or shared.

So how can you grow meaningful and valuable followers? See my 15 proven ways to start increasing your follower list:

  1. This one goes without saying – share and post informative and engaging content which is relevant and valuable. See my post on one big mistake you shouldn’t make on Twitter.
  2. Promote your Twitter username everywhere. Add it to your business cards, for sale/let boards, in your email signature and author bio’s of your guest blog posts and add a follow link to your website.
  3. Complete your bio. Make it professional and use keywords – it represents your business after all.
  4. Follow more people. There is a correlation between followers and the number of people followed. Follow your LinkedIn connections on Twitter and ask your employees to follow you and retweet your content. If you have partnerships with other businesses, arrange to promote each other’s handles to increase exposure.
  5. If you have email subscribers ask them to follow you. Let them know what to expect from your feed, for example chats, discussions or topics you’ll be talking about.
  6. Take advantage of Twitter’s recommended ‘who to follow’ feature. It’s there for a reason.
  7. Retweet generously. The more you do it, the more likely you are to be retweeted, and this is likely to attract more followers.
  8. Tweet motivational/inspirational quotes – they have higher engagement and people enjoy reading and sharing them – but don’t overdo it.
  9. You should be consistent in your tweeting and avoid tweeting in bursts. Burst tweeting leads to unfollows, as people do not like too many tweets in a short amount of time.
  10. Tweet the same content multiple times. See my post on taking a strategic approach to sharing content. As Twitter is a faced-paced platform, many of your followers are likely to miss your tweet in their feed, so sharing it multiple times increases its visibility.
  11. Use links and images in your tweets. They receive more engagement and retweets, increasing your exposure.
  12. Use relevant hashtags and keywords. Hashtags receive 2x more engagement, and you can attract new followers who are searching on your relevant keywords.
  13. @mention users in your tweets, ask them questions or for their input. They are more likely to engage with you if you do.
  14. Be direct and ask for retweets. Include “Please retweet” which receives 4x more retweets. When someone retweets your content, they’re sharing your business with their networks and your reach grows. You could try giving an incentive, such as an offer if your tweet achieves a particular number of retweets.
  15. Participate in Follow Friday (#FF). Connecting with other users and acting as a connector can increase your following.
