Shelter welcomes major parties pledges to end rough-sleeping

Shelter welcomes the pledges made in all of the major party’s manifestos this week to end rough-sleeping.

Anne Baxendale, director of policy and campaigns at Shelter, said: “Clearly the sharp rise in rough-sleeping in recent years has rung alarm bells in politicians’ ears, so it’s good to see all major parties pledging to end this scandal.

“Street homelessness is the worst and most visible symptom of the much wider housing crisis gripping our country. At Shelter we see first-hand how soaring private rents and welfare cuts have left millions of people including families with children struggling to keep a roof over their head.

“But homelessness is not inevitable and with government backing it can be eradicated in all its forms. That’s why we’re looking forward to working with the next government to make sure the right support is available for anyone facing homelessness now, as well getting enough genuinely affordable homes built for low earners in the future.”
