Historic Casino Buildings and Their Value in World Culture

Gambling has increased in popularity in recent times. Today, let’s take a stroll through history and look at some of the most famous historic casino buildings in the world. Some of these casinos have great cultural value and date back hundreds of years. It’s an important part of casino world culture.

Alexandra Nereng from casino norge in Norway has been writing about the casino industry for years. She brings a great deal of expertise to this topic. The Norske Casino website primarily deals with the latest news on casinos in Norway and reviews about online casinos.

Famous Historic Casino Buildings

We picked five historically significant casinos to share today. Their history is quite exciting; a few of them even served as homes for royalty. Let’s dive into the list.

Il Ridotto

The first casino on our list is the oldest one in the world. It dates back all the way to 1638 in Italy. Il Ridotto is literally “private room” in Italian. Initially, the casino was a wing of the Palazzo Dandolo Hotel in Venice. It was converted into a casino that was owned by the Italian Government.

While the casino was open to the public, the regulations were such that only nobles and those higher up in society could play. For example, there was a formal dress code, and the games were mostly high stakes. This automatically ruled out any commoners from participating.

Casino Le Royal Chamonix

This casino is found in the town of Chamonix in France. This quaint resort town is located right next to the french alps and has some breathtaking sights. There’s so much to see and explore besides the casino building.

The casino dates back to before the 19th century. It’s famous for the fact that it once hosted Napoleon III for a period of time. Prior to being turned into a casino, the building served as a royal hotel. Ultimately, the casino itself is not that large, but you can’t deny the great cultural and historical significance.

The Golden Gate Hotel

Las Vegas is easily one of the most well-known gambling destinations in the world and certainly in North America. The oldest building in town is the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, which was opened in 1906. As the first hotel in Vegas, it’s one of the true historic casino buildings.

It adopted the name Golden Gate in 1955, and it’s been known by the present name, Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, since 1974. The hotel and casino continue to enjoy great popularity with several excellent amenities on site. When visiting Vegas, it would be the perfect place to stay.

Casinò di Venezia

Casino di Venezia takes us back to Italy again. This casino was also opened in 1638, the same year as the Il Ridotto, and there’s some debate about which one is actually older. Regardless, this one is still a part of casino world culture. The building was a theater, but there was a room dedicated for gambling that was frequented during intermissions of the plays.

At some point, the building served as a home to royalty and was frequented by Richard Wagner, a famous German composer. Finally, it was bought in 1946 by the Italian Government and renovated into a casino again. With its location in Venice, it provides a perfect vacation spot for gamblers and adventurers alike.

Casino de Monte Carlo

The last casino on the list is in Monte Carlo, a city known for attracting wealthy high rollers. Casino de Monte Carlo is over 150 years old, having opened in 1863. It was originally constructed on Charles III’s order, with the intention for all the profits to go to the state.

Today the Monaco government and royal family still own a major stake. This casino could easily be considered one of the largest and most luxurious on our list. The halls and rooms are absolutely breathtaking.

Conclusion

Those are five of the world’s historic casinos, but they are far from the only ones. There are countless other great locales to see around the world. For those of us who can’t quite travel yet, online casinos can still provide some great entertainment.
