Four summer interior mistakes you’re probably making right now

Summer brings longer days, brighter evenings with plenty of opportunity to enjoy our homes, yet many homeowners are unknowingly making simple interior mistakes that could be leaving their spaces feeling darker, smaller and less inviting than they should.

While many people focus on refreshing their gardens and outdoor spaces during the warmer months, maximising indoor spaces is often overlooked.

From blocking natural light with poorly positioned furniture to ignoring the impact of lighter, breezier palettes, these common mistakes could be preventing homeowners from making the most of their homes this summer.

Sergiu Tulbur, Head of Product Innovation and Design at OPA Living, reveals the five most common summer interior mistakes homeowners make and how to fix them FAST.

1. Designing your living room around the television

“Many homeowners arrange every seat in the room to face the television without considering how they actually use the space during summer.

The reality is that longer evenings often mean more reading, entertaining and socialising and a room designed entirely around a screen can limit conversation and prevent you from enjoying natural views and daylight.

Creating a seating arrangement that encourages interaction rather than passive viewing can completely transform how your living room feels and functions even if it’s just a temporary change.”

2. Ignoring lighter colours during the brightest time of year

“Summer is when lighter interiors truly come into their own, yet many people continue to surround themselves with colours and finishes that absorb rather than reflect natural light.

We’re seeing growing demand for cloud inspired palettes thanks to Pantone. Think soft creams, warm neutrals, textured bouclé fabrics and airy tones that help create a brighter and more uplifting atmosphere.

You don’t need to redecorate an entire room to embrace the trend. Introducing lighter cushions, throws or occasional furniture can be enough to dramatically change the mood of a space.”

3. Letting clutter take over

“Clutter becomes far more noticeable during summer because natural light highlights every surface, corner and collection of unnecessary items as well as the dust!

Many homeowners underestimate how much visual noise can affect the way a room feels, accessories that looked cosy during winter can suddenly make a space feel crowded and overwhelming once brighter weather arrives.

A simple declutter can instantly make a room feel calmer, more spacious and far more luxurious without spending a penny.”

4. Forgetting to use the best seat in the house

“Almost every home has a spot that benefits from beautiful natural light at some point during the day, yet it’s often occupied by a storage unit, neglected corner or furniture that rarely gets used.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is failing to create spaces that allow them to enjoy the inside of their home during summer.

Whether it’s a reading chair positioned by a window, a comfortable corner for morning coffee, a work from home setup that benefits from natural light without causing screen glare, or a sofa arranged to catch the evening sun, these small decisions can have a huge impact on daily life.

The best interiors aren’t just designed to look good, they’re designed to be enjoyed even when the sun is shining.”

Expert Comment from Sergiu Tulbur, Head of Product Innovation and Design:

“Too many homeowners design their rooms for how they look rather than how they feel. The most successful interiors aren’t necessarily the most expensive or trend led but the ones that make people want to spend time in them.

Summer is the perfect reminder that our homes should work with us, not against us. Small changes to layout, light and functionality can completely transform how a space feels, helping people get more enjoyment from the rooms they use every day.”
