Heavy fines for landlords of HMO
A recent article in the Leamington Post highlights the fines that Landlords were handed out for not correctly managing their properties, the property in question was let as a house of multiple occupancy (HMO).
Councils are cracking down hard on Landlords who let out HMO’s and do not conform to regulations or let the property in a poor condition, Warwick District Council took action against Rajvir Rai and Bhajno Rai landlords of a property in Victoria Terrace, this followed a routine inspection carried out by environmental officers in January 2015.
The landlords were made to pay £27,472.08 including costs by Magistrates at Nuneaton Justice Centre, according to the Leamington Post the magistrates told the landlords the offences were very serious and that failing to provide and maintain fire precautions had put their tenants’ lives in danger.
PRIVATE landlords are being urged to act now and ensure they are in keeping with new laws, from last week it is now compulsory for smoke alarms to be fitted on every floor of rental homes. Carbon monoxide alarms must also be fitted in properties which burn solid fuels.
