5 Ways to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

With the rising cost of living, particularly when it comes to energy bills, making your home more energy efficient is not only essential for protecting the planet, but it will help to protect your pennies too.

Knowing where to start can be overwhelming, and some energy saving solutions require an upfront investment and significant changes to your property. However, there are also smaller things that we can all do in our homes that can make a difference.

If you’re looking to make your home more energy efficient, then here are just five fantastic solutions to consider.

1) Solar Panels

What is perhaps the most initially costly change that you can make is the installation of solar panels on your roof – at least if you choose to buy them out right.

However, not only will solar panels help you save money on your monthly bills, but it’s a step in the right direction towards renewable energy.

If you’re considering solar power, speak to your energy provider, as they may have schemes in place to help you get started, or at least be able to point you in the right direction.

2) Draft Excluders

At the other end of the scale, one of the simplest things we can do in our homes is to place draft excluders in front of doors to prevent drafts from coming in through the gaps.

If you’re looking for something cute and cosy, consider an online marketplace such as Etsy. Here you’ll find unique products from independent crafters.

Whether you want something simple like a long, patterned cushion, or to push the boat out with a knitted sausage dog (because what other dog could be more appropriately shaped for a draft excluder!) you’ll find a wide range of designs to suit all aesthetics.

3) Double Glazing

While many homes now have double glazing, there are still some older homes that haven’t made the transition yet. In some cases, this is due to listed restrictions, in others, previous or even current owners may not have gotten round to it.

However, with the rising cost of energy bills, double glazing is essential for helping to keep in the heat. Experts such as Halifax Glass provide all sorts of glazing solutions, from decorative mirrors to sealed glass units.

By installing double glazing, you’ll be able to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

4) Insulation

Ensuring that your loft, and even walls, are insulated can go a long way to reducing your energy costs.

Of course, as with other energy saving solutions, insulation can require a larger upfront cost, but it will save you money in the long run.

However, depending on your circumstances and means, you could be able to receive a grant to help insulate your home. Check out this handy guide on the government website to discover if you qualify for insulation assistance.

5) Turn Off Appliances

While not all of our appliances can be turned off, such as the fridge and freezer, leaving other items on standby still uses unnecessary power.

While the amount that it can save you isn’t always significant, turning items off at the wall where you are able to do so is a good habit to get yourself into.
