Top 10 hacks to simplify your house move

Top 10 hacks to simplify your house move

Are you thinking of moving house but cannot deal with the hassle? Instead of thinking of it as a ‘big pack up’, think positive. We have some great tips to make sure your new adventure goes as smoothly as possible…

Wrap up your wardrobe

Let’s be honest, most of us women have enough clothes to dress the whole family for the foreseeable future, there is just something about clothes that make them so addictive! But if you’re looking at your wardrobe and thinking ‘where do I start?’ we’ve got an idea for you. Instead of packing it all into storage boxes and then having to take them all back out again, just stock up on bin bags! It sounds crazy but you can put bin bags over your already hanging clothes to keep them together and in place. This way, once you arrive at your lovely new house, you will simply be able to hang them back up.

Capture those rooms

Another great idea to save you a lot of time and bother is visiting your house before you move and taking photos of both the interior and exterior of the house. Not only will they be needed if you’re renting the property to get your deposit back, but you will be able to imagine and decide where you will be putting all your belongings. This way, you will speed up your unpacking process and you won’t have to move the sofa 5 times to get it in the right spot!

Don’t get locked out

I think we have all experienced that annoying moment where your door swings shut and you’re left trying to break into your own home! Not only will your neighbours have a field day watching you juggle a pile of cardboard boxes but it will also be a hell of a mission. However, do not fear, try popping a rubber band around the door handle to stop it closing or invest in a doorstop.

Label your chargers and plug sockets

With the world getting more and more technology-centric it is becoming more apparent that we have way too many charging cables! Whether they’re for your phone, laptop or speakers – there is always an endless struggle to untangle all those wires which you put into one box. Why not label them as you pack! These could be colour coded for each room and you don’t have to go out and get expensive labels either, sticky notes or tabs from loaves of bread can do the job.

Protect the bed

The last thing you want is a dirty, broken mattress on the day of your move as you want a good night’s sleep after all the hard work you’ve done. To stop this from happening, invest in some cheap fitted sheets that you can add to each side of the mattress.

Getting rid of nail holes

To make a house a home it usually involves putting up photos of your memories or your favourite art. Whatever your taste, when it comes to taking them down you may be left with a number of holes in your wall. A quick way to get rid of these is to scrub a bar of soap across the hole until it is filled, alternatively a squeezy tube of filler only costs a couple of pounds from your local hardware store.

Carry them with style

Do you find holding a full box of packing hard to carry? So do we! The simple answer is, make the box easier to carry. Either using a pair of scissors or a knife, cut hand holes into two sides of the box – it may be easier to cut them towards the top of the box.

Put string underneath tape

Trying to rip sticky tape off a box can be a tedious task but not with this great invention. Leave a tail of string hanging out from the tape so that you can easily rip it off when you need to.

De-clutter

What better reason to get rid of the things you don’t need than a move. Getting rid of unwanted toys, clothes and furniture will shave hours off your packing time. But you don’t have to just get rid of them; you could always sell them, give them away to charity or give them to friends. You’ll have more space in your new home for new things that you can now buy with that extra cash you just raised!

Eat all the food!

Be prepared, this one is by far the best idea! Here is your excuse to eat the entire contents of your fridge, freezer and even your cupboards! It is surprising how much space food can take up when you’re packing so just get rid of it. What is a faster way than filling your belly up with your favourite food (shhh! We won’t tell if you don’t).
