Wellesbourne Allotments reject proposal to build 50 new homes
A group of Wellesbourne Allotment Association plot holders who had to make a vote over whether Coventry Diocese’s proposal to build 50 new homes on their community site should be allowed or not was voted against earlier this month. New builds are in short supply and in many regions are badly needed, though the Diocese that owns the land where allotments have existed for over 180 years have continued what has been a stubborn rebellion against any such plans with a 98% vote against (82% turn out) by plot holders.
We sure can understand the delicate situation and there must be many other locations locally that could lend itself to such a development site, allotments are important to many people and provide a relaxing (though at times back breaking) pleasure / hobby that helps to bring communities together unless of course someone starts to report on their runner beans missing!
Chair Ian Hope is quoted as saying: “Plotholders expressed a number of wide ranging views and concerns and overwhelmingly agreed to reject the proposal and to continue to fight to remain on land where local people have been growing their own food for more than 180 years.”
