Tweeting and your profile on Twitter has a real value?

With millions of them being sent every day and shared amongst a multi million membership of businesses, consumers and ‘spam’ accounts, has a Tweet any real value as it’s surely just a tiny drop in a very big ocean when it comes to your voice being actually heard for real? Let us say that Tweeting is equal to a human voice then that statement doesn’t hold very well, as many voices out there, especially in the business world, compete against many other voices, but some get heard and followed by many? If you have ever gone business networking, you’ll have admired that person who is a great communicator and gets on very well with everyone, even though his business topic might not be the most interesting, I’m sure that has been the case.

Have some Tweets got greater value than others? This would be a more accurate question to ask as many things determine the effectiveness of a Tweet such as:

  • From whom the Tweet is being sent, a key business figure, consumer, top industry brand, governing body, celebrity, professionally branded account, spam etc.
  • The amount of ‘real’ followers that the account has.
  • What the content of that Tweet is, news, images, video, link, trending hashtag etc.
  • When that Tweet is being sent out.

When I was a youngster, I was always interested in collecting celebrity autographs which many I still have today. Back then, I would write off and many times receive a signed photo in reply which I would frame and place in my bedroom (this is long before the days of Ebay where millions of real and fake autographs are apparently sold). I would be able to show family and friends the signed photos, it was my way of boasting ‘look at me’! Bring things a generation forward and I think that people are more interested in social media actions over signed photos where stating something like ‘Peter Andre followed me 03/08/2014″ holds a more important place ‘on the mantelpiece’ over writing off for and receiving his and other celebrities signed photos (unless you want to sell them on Ebay)… The all important holy grail, the selfie with a celebrity, is what really defines many on social media, certainly worth an update and many times used as the accounts actual profile image. The importance of social media in making a statement of who you are is growing as people want to convey who they are on the likes of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn over worrying about how they appear and act in real life.

So, if the likes of Twitter and the content it holds is growing in importance, then that tells us that if we share the right kind of Tweet at the best time from a recognised account to a healthy target audience then we hold something of value. If we can turn heads of those people heavily engaged with social media then that audience is of interest to us, we have a valuable channel to send that Tweet to and from. Yes, just like any form of marketing, 80% of which we are usually told is a waste of time/money/effort, you can either be successful from it or fail miserably, but social media and the likes of Twitter allows us to have better control of things:

  • Twitter is Free to use.
  • You determine the quality of your profile and the content you share, ie the message you give out which will / will not attract followers to you.
  • You control the amount of time and effort you wish to dedicate to social media.
  • Where you rank / how popular you are is down to you (though you can pay for sponsored posts now with Twitter to include promoting your account).

Those who understand Twitter really well will have target audiences following them (this doesn’t always mean high numbers, just quality of followers), they will have professional accounts, they will share relevant content in a style they know their target audience appreciates at a time that is most effective. Being seen as the authority within their industry will make Twitter accounts more successful in their return on investment of Tweeting out content, replies, shares and reTweets.

So, if it is more important to people that they can share who they are on Twitter and express their achievements with greater pride over old fashioned ways such as our signed photo taking pride of place on our mantelpiece, then surely if you master Twitter in full you’ll find that the value of each Tweet you share will increase (you can now view your Tweet activity on Twitter which allows you to see results on each one such as impressions and total engagements).
